How to Open a Barre Studio & Other FAQ's

How much does it cost to open a barre studio?

The cost of opening a barre studio can vary significantly depending on the brand, market, studio size, buildout requirements, equipment, staffing, and lease terms. For example, most franchises currently list a total investment range of $350,000 to $650,000, with a minimum cash requirement of $250,000 and a net worth requirement of $500,000.  They also list a $50k to $60k franchise fee, plus ongoing 7%-9% royalty & marketing fees based on gross sales.

But the initial investment is only part of the decision. You also want to consider ongoing royalties, required vendors, brand standards, territory restrictions, required buildout specifications, and how much control you will have over your classes, pricing, marketing, and client experience.

That is exactly why Studio in a Box was created: to help women open boutique fitness studios with franchise-level systems, without the franchise fees, royalties, or rules.

Is a Barre Franchise the only option for opening a barre studio?

Most of the barre franchise options include brands list the cost to build and open a new studio as ranging from $350,000 to $650,851, depending on the market. Many successful barre and boutique fitness studios are independently owned, which means you can create your own brand, choose your own class formats, build your own culture, and keep more control over your business decisions - often for less than $100,000 - $150,000, depending on construction.

Can I open a barre studio without buying a franchise?

Yes. You can absolutely open a barre studio without buying a franchise.

The key is not whether you buy a franchise. The key is whether you have the right systems in place before you open. You still need a strong business plan, realistic financial projections, a clear target market, a smart location strategy, lease support, buildout guidance, legal templates, staffing systems, marketing campaigns, sales processes, and retention systems.

Studio in a Box gives you the structure many people look for in a franchise, but without giving up your independence. It is designed to help you open a barre, Pilates, yoga, strength, or boutique fitness studio as your own brand, with tools, templates, coaching, and launch systems to guide you from idea to opening.

What should I know before signing a studio lease?

Before signing a studio lease, you need to understand far more than the monthly rent.

You should know whether the space can support your class capacity, sound needs, flooring needs, HVAC requirements, parking, signage, visibility, client flow, instructor flow, and buildout budget. You also need to review renewal terms, tenant improvement allowances, maintenance responsibilities, personal guarantees, common area charges, tax obligations, exclusivity clauses, and what happens if construction takes longer than expected.

One of the biggest mistakes new studio owners make is falling in love with a space before they understand the numbers. A bad lease can create tens of thousands of dollars in avoidable expenses before you ever teach your first class. Studio in a Box includes lease, landlord, contractor, permit, and buildout guidance so you can make a more informed decision before you commit.

What systems do I need before opening a barre studio?

Before opening your barre studio, you need systems for both launch and long-term operations.

At a minimum, you should have:

    1. A business plan and financial projections
    2. A startup budget and funding plan
    3. A location and lease evaluation process
    4. A buildout and vendor plan

    Real Success Stories...

After receiving a glowing testimonial from another client of Amy’s, my decision was simple - I went all in. It was one of the easiest (and best) decisions I have made.

While the abundant information and resources in the SIB portal are valuable time and money savers, I have found the most value and support in my direct contact with Amy (my “Amy Dates”).

Our entire process of opening our studio was just a few months and Amy’s analogy of “drinking water through a fire hose” was spot on! In addition to her vast knowledge and experience (lease negotiations build out, staffing, marketing, etc.),

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Amy's Studio in a Box program. I highly recommend it for anyone dreaming of starting a studio without the franchise fees, while maintaining true creative freedom.

I had contemplated opening a Barre franchise but I had always heard that you were buying yourself a job when you buy into a barre franchise...which is what I wanted to leave. They also required very high liquidity and required me to quit my job. I thirsted for the freedom to do what I wanted and to have the flexibility without rules and fees, but also wanted (and needed) the support. I would not have gotten my loan or a real estate agent to take me seriously without the documents provided for a business plan and financial projections within the program.

If you have a dream of owning your own studio, Amy’s so worth it!

As I started out my dream of having my very own studio, I really didn’t think I would be able to NOT go with a Barre3 franchise. I just didn’t think I had enough business and marketing knowledge to start up a studio from scratch. As I looked deeper into the world of franchises, I realized how limited I would be, financially and creatively, to start up this dream.

I can’t imagine the stress I would be under if I had decided to go with a franchise--the fees, the monthly royalty payments, the lack of personal expression… the list goes on.
