Goal Setting for the new year!

You know what I love about a brand new year? The fact that we get to wipe the slate clean and start again.

For me and my husband, Mike, 2013 was a rough year. His dad died of lung cancer, and much of the year was spent traveling back and forth to Florida.  Then 2019 certainly had some challenges.  We had an expensive issue with one of the businesses we had sold in California – and had finally gotten it completely resolved

We were counting down the days till 2020! And everyone seemed to be looking forward to the new year with such anticipation. But for us – although no one died in 2019 – there were still a number of unanticipated challenges and growing opportunities.

So, as 2019 was coming to a close, we were starting to look to 2020 with the same hope of bright, shiny new things!

One of my and Mike’s New Year’s traditions has been to sit down and do a year in review of the prior year and establish our goals for the next year. This tends to be a really good exercise for us. We enjoy reviewing our successes (our failures not so much) and looking toward the new year with a renewed sense of possibility. It is also a great time to determine if we are on the same page. You can always tell where someone’s heart is by their goals and their checkbook.

But one thing that tends to be unfortunate about our goal-setting routines is that we don’t set and review our goals often enough. I have a horrible history of writing down my goals and saving them in a file on my computer or putting them on my bulletin board and never really look at them again.

So, in 2020, I am going to challenge you to review YOUR goal-setting experience. You need to know WHERE you want to go to know if you are going the right direction! You’ve likely heard the analogy that you climb all the way up a ladder – get to the top – and find out the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall.

So before you go into 2020 – ask yourself what your goal is for the year!

  • Are you looking to become a barre instructor?
  • Are you looking to learn some other type of fitness skill?
  • Are you looking to open a fitness business?
  • Or are you looking to make your current fitness business more profitable?
  • Do you want more time freedom in the next year?
  • Do you want to make just a thousand dollars more each month?


A study of Harvard MBA students found THIS about goals –

13% of the class had identified goals.

Only 3% wrote them down.

The 13% of the class who had goals, but did not write them down was earning twice the amount of the 84% who had no goals.

The 3% who had written goals were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97% of the class combined!

So – as we go into the new year – take just a half-hour to write down your goals and identify WHERE you want to go! If you don’t, it’s very likely that this time next year – you’ll be in a very similar place to where you are today – with no real progress!
